The Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer is a high-performance wristwatch with revolutionary double detent escapement in a unique dial-less aesthetics for Only Watch 10th Edition.
In 2020, the very discreet Bernhard Lederer was again propelled to the forefront of the watchmaking scene when he unveiled a movement of rare ingenuity. Based on the foundations first laid by Breguet, then expanded by George Daniels, it was the culmination of extensive work on the heart of the mechanical watch: its escapement. Breguet's had intuited that a bi-directional detent escapement – an échappement naturel (Natural Escapement) – would inherently be more efficient. 150 years later, George Daniels took up the idea, but with an escapement that operated at the low frequency of 2Hz better suited to a pocket watch.
The watch also had to be twisted to get the movement started. To address the dynamics of a watch worn on the wrist and ensure its reliability, Lederer first raised the frequency of his escapement – to 3Hz. More importantly, however, he sought a solution which, thanks to its geometry, would force the two escapement wheels to interact in such a way as to deliver optimum chronometric operation and precision under everyday conditions. Lederer’s invention aligns the escapements’ impulse, hence the name of the watch: Central Impulse Chronometer.
Model name:
Central Impulse Chronometer
CIC 9018 – OW - 10
Case:
The 44mm diameter case is made of stainless steel 904 L with DLC black treatment. Water resistant up to 30 meters.
Dial:
Lederer’s invention shines through with the remarkable symmetric movement fully revelated on the dial side. Hour markers are engraved inside the sapphire dome. Time can be read directly on the movement itself.
Calibre:
Hours and minutes — 220 components, including 46 rubies — 21,600 vph (3 Hz) — Hand-wound mechanism — Double barrels — Two independent gear trains, two constant-force remontoirs — Mirrored detent escapement with centrally aligned impulses
Bracelet:
Black soft calf leather, saddle-stitched by hand
Dimensions:
Diameter: 44mm
Thickness: 12.2mm
Specificities:
Bernhard Lederer installed the two escapement wheels at the end of two separate gear trains, each with its own barrel and 10-second constant force ‘remontoire’ (winding system) for the optimum chronometric precision.
The brand
The Central Impulse Chronometer was born in the Lederer Watches manufactory, located in Saint Blaise on Lake Neuchatel. Bernhard Lederer, one of the first members of the renowned AHCI Academy, is one of the few independent watch manufacturers to have developed its own Manufacture over the years with more than 25 qualified employees.
This autonomy allows to create entirely in-house exceptional watches with unique escapements, according to the highest quality standards set by Bernhard Lederer.
